Meet the Speakers

David Day

Innovation Center Director,
Career and Online Education Director
Pryor High School

David currently serves as the Innovation Center Director at Pryor High School. In this role, he oversees
and develops a diverse range of programs, including HVAC internships, robotics, computer-aided design (CAD), computer science, emergency medical technician (EMT) training, virtual reality coding, graphic design, esports, and aviation.

 

Prior to his current position, David dedicated 24 years to coaching basketball and teaching Physical
Science. He consistently demonstrated a commitment to providing innovative learning experiences
that align with local industry needs and significantly enhance student employment opportunities.
David holds a B.S. in Secondary Education from Oklahoma State University and a M.S. from East Central
University in Educational Leadership.

Gena Gesing

Owner, Spirited Strategies
Former Educational Leader at Northeast Iowa Community College

Gena successfully led the creation of an integrated work-based learning continuum and career coaching framework funded by a $2.7 million Department of Labor Youth CareerConnect grant (2014-2019). She secured the program’s sustainability beyond the initial grant. Additionally, she reshaped a statewide work-based learning initiative, the Iowa Intermediary Network, while also serving as a community college Director of Career Services.

 

Gena expanded her scope of impact through Spirited Strategies where her current projects include the U.S. Department of Education Career Z Challenge, the U.S. Department of Education CHIPS Challenge, and the HRSA Community Health Worker Training Program grant. Through Iowa Jobs for America’s Graduates (iJAG), she also drives the development of a dynamic work-based learning system that supports over 170 programs. Unsurprisingly, Gena is also recognized as a finalist for the 2023 ACTE Counseling & Career Development Professional Award.

Sonia Smith

Grant Manager, Interplay Learning

Sonia works as Interplay Learning’s grant expert, where she assists nonprofit and education partners with securing funding for their programs. Prior to joining Interplay, Sonia worked in nonprofit administration for arts and education nonprofits.
