Building Skills Onsite: Facilities Training at Four Seasons Resorts Palm Beach

Facilities team members at Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach review training materials together outdoors, demonstrating hands-on mechanical systems education in a real-world setting.

At Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach, the facilities and engineering team play a critical role in ensuring the property runs smoothly and delivers a seamless guest experience. From HVAC systems and electrical infrastructure to maintaining kitchen equipment and safety systems, their work supports every aspect of daily operations.

To keep up with the technical demands of a luxury resort and reduce the inefficiencies of traditional training, Director of Engineering Gunjan Luitel and his facilities team turned to Interplay Learning’s immersive simulation-based training platform. The platform has enabled cost savings, increased confidence in troubleshooting, improved employee engagement, and paved the way for internal promotions.

Replacing Offsite Training with Flexible, On-Demand Learning

Before Interplay, finding the right training often meant struggling to find relevant courses, align schedules, and send employees off-site. “We used to invite outside instructors or pay to send staff to multi-day courses,” Gunjan explained. “But scheduling was always a problem. Someone might be off that day or unavailable, or we simply couldn’t find training on the content we needed.”

Those challenges came with a price, not just financial costs, but operational strain and lost learning opportunities.

From Pilot Program to Property-Wide Adoption

The Interplay journey began as a pilot at several Four Seasons locations, including Palm Beach. The initial feedback from the engineering team was overwhelmingly positive. “Our team members found Interplay Learning to be very practical for the jobs they do every single day,” said Gunjan. Based on that success, the property committed to a full-year rollout and expanded access to include the security team.

“With Interplay, we give them training access 24/7,” Gunjan said. “They can train at work during downtime or at home, whenever it works best for them because it’s for their own growth and development.”

Gunjan estimates that Interplay saves the resort over $5,000 annually in training-related expenses. But even more valuable than the cost savings is how this shift has changed the learning experience itself.

“What really sets the training apart is the flexibility. There’s no time limit, so our team can go through the material as many times as they need. That ability to learn at their own pace builds real confidence. It’s a big difference from a traditional classroom setting where time is limited and questions can be rushed.”

Putting Training Into Practice: Real Results in the Field

For the engineering and security teams at Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach, Interplay Learning’s true value is its real-world relevance. The platform isn’t just a library of videos and simulation scenarios; it’s a tool that prepares staff to solve problems in the field with confidence and competence.

After completing a refrigeration course, Gunjan Luitel recalled a standout moment when one of his engineers was tasked with fixing a malfunctioning cooler. “He told me he remembered the exact steps from the training and followed them in order,” Gunjan said. “He was excited, saying, ‘I’ve done this, I’ve seen this on Interplay, this is the next step.’” That connection between simulation and real-life troubleshooting made a lasting impact.

Across the resort, the engineering staff relies on Interplay’s HVAC training to confidently manage and maintain the property’s systems, including rooftop units, air conditioning systems, and refrigeration equipment. The platform equips them with the technical foundation to troubleshoot efficiently, make informed decisions on-site, and keep critical systems running smoothly without hesitation or delay.

Electrical training has also been essential. Engineers have used courses on breaker panel troubleshooting, motor control circuits, and electrical safety to tackle real challenges across the property. These tasks require precision and understanding to avoid disruptions to guest services.

One Platform for Multiple Departments

The resort’s security team has also embraced the training platform, particularly its comprehensive catalog of safety and compliance courses. Team members actively use modules on topics like bloodborne pathogens, preventing slips, trips, and falls, hazard identification and risk assessment, emergency response, and active shooter scenarios. These lessons have enhanced their preparedness and deepened their understanding of the processes and procedures necessary to navigate critical situations.

The resort also explores how Interplay can support cross-training in other departments, including pool and beach operations. “We saw opportunities where some courses, like heat exhaustion or emergency response, would benefit those teams as well,” Gunjan explained.

Whether it’s an engineer troubleshooting a cooler or a security officer preparing for an emergency, the Interplay platform is helping staff connect training directly to the responsibilities they face each day. And as Gunjan’s team continues to apply what they learn in real time, the resort benefits from fewer delays, greater self-sufficiency, and a workforce that feels empowered to step up.

Promoting from Within: Building Career Pathways

Gunjan sees Interplay as a talent development tool as much as a training one. One example is Christopher Warren, a junior-level Engineer 2, who quickly became one of the platform’s top users.

“He’s the second-highest scorer on the platform,” Gunjan said. “He constantly references what he’s learned in Interplay when solving problems on-site. You can see the passion.”

Thanks to his dedication, Christopher has recently been promoted to Engineer 3. “It’s a clear pathway,” Gunjan added. “It’s motivating others, too.”

Creating Confidence and Curiosity

The Interplay platform has helped shift the team’s mindset. “Instead of backing off from new challenges, our engineers are excited to take them on,” said Maintenance Supervisor Wentzer Charles. “Now they say, ‘Let’s go at it.’ They’re applying what they learn right away.”

This cultural shift is reinforced through healthy competition. “Every other day, we share the scores in our team briefing,” said Gunjan. “They encourage each other to get more points, which drives engagement.”

That engagement shows in the data. After piloting Interplay, the team was surveyed on whether they wanted to continue using the tool. “Everyone who participated found it useful and asked us to renew it,” Gunjan said.

Gunjan also credits Interplay with helping the engineering team score over 90% in Four Seasons’ annual employee engagement survey, a benchmark of team spirit and cohesion. “It’s not just about learning. It’s about being engaged with the team.”

Training That Works Across Generations

With the team age ranging from early 20s to late 60s, Gunjan needed a training platform that worked for everyone. While some team members were initially hesitant, the ease of use won them over. “Once they try it, it becomes easier, and we just keep encouraging everyone,” he said.

The flexibility of the platform even inspires some to train while on vacation. “If somebody is passionate, there’s no stopping them,” Gunjan said. “We don’t mandate it, but we support that drive.”

New hires are introduced to Interplay early, with optional assessments that help them identify their strengths and areas for growth. Whether it’s HVAC, plumbing, or electrical work, the platform allows for self-directed learning and team-driven assignments.

Final Word: “Go Buy It Yesterday”

When asked what he’d say to other facilities leaders considering Interplay Learning, Gunjan didn’t hold back.

“Go buy it yesterday. You’re missing out.”

At Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach, Interplay Learning is more than a training tool; it’s building a stronger, more confident team ready to solve problems, grow their careers, and keep the resort running at its best.
