A National Initiative to Build Job-Ready Data Center Talent, Faster

America is building data centers fast, but training programs can’t keep up. America’s Mission Critical Workforce is a national initiative created to address training capacity issues and connect employers with emerging talent sooner.

Led by Interplay Learning, the initiative brings together an alliance of employers and workforce development leaders who will identify workforce needs, shape scalable training programs, and help people across the country prepare for in-demand careers.

America Has a Training Capacity Problem

Data center construction is expanding faster than the available workforce, creating new career opportunities for blue-collar workers. The numbers tell the story.

Delayed Construction

The Wall Street Journal found that half of data center construction sites report project disruptions tied to labor and technical leadership shortages, resulting in increased backlogs.

Labor Shortage

The U.S. needs 300,000+ new electricians over the next decade to build out AI infrastructure, on top of roughly 20,000 union electricians retiring each year, according to the Data Center Construction Report.

Untrained Applicants

JLL reports that for every 100 applicants who walk through the door, only 15 meet the minimum qualifications for a modern data center role.

Lost Revenue

A single month of delay on a standard data center can cost an operator upwards of $14 million in lost revenue, according to the Data Center Construction Report

Be Part of Building the Solution

Alliance members contribute their expertise and work together to establish a workforce development model designed for the speed and scale of the data center industry.

For the People Who Are Building America’s Infrastructure

Hyperscalers and Major Workforce Funders

Companies are investing billions in data center infrastructure and losing real money every time a role goes unfilled. America’s Mission Critical Workforce offers a faster, more effective way to build the talent pipeline.

Workforce Development Organizations and Community Colleges

Data center investment is creating urgent demand for new training programs, but building specialized curriculum and instructor capacity from the ground up takes time. Join an alliance built to deliver a credible, ready-to-deploy path into data center careers and a seat at the table shaping what comes next.

Industry Leaders and Champions

Construction managers, program managers, facilities leaders, and the public officials representing communities where data centers are being built see the shortage firsthand. The alliance provides a channel to advise on which foundational skills matter, connect graduates to real recruiting pipelines, and ensure the community benefits from the growth around it.

Modern Training Technology That Works

Modern technology, such as AI and 3D simulations, creates opportunities to extend learning beyond the classroom, making training more flexible, accessible, and scalable. Interplay combines immersive learning technology with deep trades expertise to help training programs expand their reach. The Alliance takes this a step further by bringing leaders together to turn that technical know-how into a collective vision for the future of trades training that creates an accessible digital onramp for data center careers, gives job seekers a way in and offers employers early access to a broader pool of talent.

Why Interplay is Leading This Initiative

Interplay Learning has spent more than 10 years building simulation-based training that gets people ready for careers in the skilled trades, and we’re putting that experience to work on one of the biggest labor challenges in the country.

  • 14,000+ customers trust Interplay to power career development
  • 500,000+ learners trained across the skilled and craft trades
  • 1,800+ hours of skilled trades training content and counting
  • 10+ years building accessible, simulation-based training at scale

Interplay works with employers and workforce organizations on both sides of this pipeline, every single day. This alliance puts those relationships and accessible technology to work at a national scale.

Building for the Future

Creating an alliance is only the beginning for America’s Mission Critical Workforce. Creating tangible outcomes that improve the capacity problem is the ultimate goal. Therefore, the alliance will come together in quarterly working sessions to identify the greatest challenges in closing the skills gap and develop actionable plans to solve this problem. With the expertise of alliance members and the power of ever-evolving technology, America’s Mission Critical Workforce will be in a unique position to map a new way of training.

America cannot continue to grow if our training capacity problem is not addressed. This alliance provides the chance for leaders in the space to join together and build pathways to better careers and better lives for thousands of citizens.
